Casa Milà - La Pedrera FAQs

  1. Do you need to book tickets in advance to visit Casa Milà - La Pedrera?
  • No, its not compulsory to purchase tickets in advance, however, we do suggest it for a few reasons. Booking tickets online can save you time as queues do form at La Pedrera ticket office, so booking online helps you to avoid them. Plus, buying tickets at the ticket office can cost more money due to handling fees charged at the ticket window.
  1. Is Casa Milà - La Pedrera wheelchair accessible?
  • Most of Casa Milà -La Pedrera is wheelchair accessible, yes. Unfortunately the roof terrace is not. The building has created a platform at the exit of the lift which gives a sweeping view of the roof terrace, but actual wheelchair access to the roof terrace is not possible at this time unfortunately.
  1. What is the best time to visit Casa Milà - La Pedrera?
  • The mornings (between 9-10) are generally a little quieter and in the afternoons after 4pm. But it's unlikely you will have La Pedrera to your self I'm afraid, its just too popular!
  1. How long does it take to see Casa Milà - La Pedrera?
  • Once you are in, you can spend as little or as long as you like in La Pedrera. The average visit is usually around 2 hours though.
  1. Can I take a stroller in to Casa Milà - La Pedrera?
  • Strollers are not allowed in Casa Milà - La Pedrera, they need to be left at the entrance. We always suggest taking a baby carrier, where possible.

Casa Milà - La Pedrera Fun Facts

  • The façade of Casa Milà which gives the building its nickname of "La Pedrera" due to its similarity to an open quarry, is not a structural part of the property and doesn't act as a load bearing wall to the property but instead is made up of over 6000 blocks of stone which are connected to the structure by metal components, and that is how the large windows on the front of the property were made possible.
  • There are three types of stone used. Limestone from two locations, Garraf & Ulldecona (with the different limestones used for different reasons) and stone from Vilafranca de Penedès.
  • Gaudi's clever use of pillars made from stone, brick and iron are used for load bearing purposes in the property and that allowed him to built the interior as he wanted so he didn't need to worry about load bearing walls ruining the flow of the property.
  • You will notice there are very few (if any) straight lines in Casa Milà due to Gaudi's love of nature.
  • The owners of the property, Pere Mila & his wife, Roser Segimon lived on one floor and rented the rest of the building out as private apartments.
  • The building had many problems until UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1984 and the property was then renovated.
  • Casa Milà has around 150 windows!
  • Casa Milà - La Pedrera was Gaudi's last major private commission before he started to concentrate solely on the Sagrada Familia.
  • Casa Milà - La Pedrera is listed by UNESCO.
  • The chimney stacks at La Pedrera resemble warriors.
