Casa Vicens Interesting Facts

  • Gaudi's First Property: Casa Vicens is considered to be Gaudi's fist major architectural work, marking the start of his illustrious career!
  • Private Residence: The house was originally designed as a summer residence for a wealthy stockbroker, Manuel Vicens i Montaner but it is now owned by Morabanc, an Andorran bank and open to the public to enjoy.
  • Moorish Influence: Gaudi was influenced by Moorish and Oriental styles whilst building Casa Vicens, which was part of the Mudéjar architectural tradition and this is evident in the intricate tile work and use of bright colours.
  • Materials: Gaudí used a variety of materials in the construction of Casa Vicens, including ceramic tiles, iron, wood, and stone, which all complimented each other, showcasing his innovative approach.
  • Garden: The house was originally surrounded by an expansive garden, which featured many species of plants. Gaudí even incorporated elements of nature into the house’s design, such as palm leaves and floral motifs in the wrought iron gate to blend and link the flow of the property.
  • Decorative Tiles: The signature green and white ceramic tiles on the exterior are a tribute to the marigold flowers that grew on the original site before the house was built, linking the house to its roots.
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site: Casa Vicens was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of the "Works of Antoni Gaudí," celebrating its architectural and cultural significance.
  • Eclectic Interior: Casa Vicens' interior is decorated with vivid murals, ornate woodwork, and a mix of styles, which again reflects Gaudí’s love for detail and craftsmanship.
  • Experimental Architecture: Casa Vicens is considered a precursor to Gaudí's later, more organic architectural style. The building incorporates both straight lines and curves, showcasing his evolving architectural vision. Later properties didn't all have straight lines as he started to follow more natural courses and as he said, you don't find straight lines in nature!
