Eiffel Tower Fun and Interesting Facts

  • Temporary Landmark: The Eiffel Tower was originally intended to be a temporary structure, built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) in Paris. It was supposed to be dismantled after 20 years, but it became so popular that it was allowed to remain.
  • Height Varies with Temperature: The Eiffel Tower is made of iron, which expands and contracts with temperature changes. As a result, the tower can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) taller during the summer!
  • Painted Every Seven Years: To prevent rust, the Eiffel Tower is repainted every seven years. It takes about 60 tons of paint to cover the entire structure, and the process takes around 18 months to complete.
  • Eyesore: When the Eiffel Tower was first built, many Parisians and artists criticised its design, calling it an eyesore. Over time, however, it has become one of the most iconic symbols of Paris and France.
  • Radio Saved It: The Eiffel Tower was nearly dismantled after its initial 20-year permit expired, but it was saved because it proved useful as a giant radio antenna. During World War I, the tower was used to intercept enemy communications.
  • A Beacon of Light: The Eiffel Tower is illuminated by 20,000 light bulbs every evening. This sparkling display occurs for five minutes every hour on the hour after sunset, making it a spectacular sight for visitors.
  • It Has Its Own Post Office: The Eiffel Tower has a tiny post office on the first floor where visitors can send postcards with a special Eiffel Tower postmark.
  • A Popular Proposal Spot: The Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular spots in the world for marriage proposals. It's estimated that hundreds of proposals happen each year, making it a true symbol of romance.
