Uffizi Gallery Interesting Facts

  • Historical Roots: The Uffizi Gallery was originally designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1560 as office space for Florentine magistrates, which is why it's called "Uffizi" (meaning offices in Italian)!
  • Oldest Museum: The Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest museums in the world! It officially opened to the public in 1765, though it has housed art collections since the 16th century!
  • Private Corridor: The ‘Vasari Corridor, is an enclosed walkway above Florence, which connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace! It was built for the Medici family in order that they could move safely between the two buildings without interacting with the public!
  • Lost Da Vinci: It’s questioned whether The Uffizi once held a lost painting by Leonardo da Vinci called ‘The Battle of Anghiari’. The painting is still ‘missing’ so no one actually knows!
  • Medici's Treasure Trove: The Uffizi houses much of the Medici family’s vast art collection, one of the most important in Renaissance history. The gallery has more than 2200 pieces of art which includes paintings, sculptures and antiques.
  • Haunted: Some believe the Uffizi Gallery is haunted by Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici, the last of the Medici line, who is credited with ensuring the art collection remained in Florence.
  • Artworks Everywhere: The gallery has over 100 rooms filled with art, but still not all of the collection is on display. Many pieces are kept in storage due to space constraints! The Medici family knew how to collect art, that is for sure!
  • Amazing Views: From the Uffizi's upper floors, you get one of the best panoramic views of the Florence skyline, including a fabulous view of the Ponte Vecchio and Brunelleschi's Dome.
