The Acropolis of Lindos is an ancient citadel on the eastern coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, situated around 55 kilometres south of the capital city, Rhodes Town.
The Acropolis of Lindos is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece due to its historical significance and architectural importance. Its history dates back to ancient times with evidence of human habitation as far back as the Neolithic period. It was inhabited successively by the Dorians, the Romans, the Byzantine, the Knights of St. John and then the Ottomans.
The Doric Temple of Athena Lindia is one of the most notable structures on the Acropolis. Dating back to the 4th century BCE, the temple is sadly just a ruin, but remnants are still visible and provide an insight into the ancient Greek architectural styles as well as their religious practices.
The Acropolis of Lindos served as a fortified citadel with defensive walls and towers which were constructed by the various civilisations that lived there over the centuries. The fortifications were essential for protecting the city from various invaders and of course pirates.
Due to its location, the Acropolis of Lindos also offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape and the Aegean Sea as well as the town of Lindos below it. Many visitors climb to the top of the citadel to enjoy the incredible views it offers. You can even see nearby islands from up there.
There have been many archaeological excavations over time including ongoing ones which have helped to uncover various artefacts and ancient structures which all also add to the site’s history. They’ve found temple remains, residences and other structures which all help to piece together the daily life of these ancient civilisations.
Given the site’s history, the Acropolis of Lindos has become a firm favourite and tourist hotspot and now attracts visitors from around the world. The location is beautiful and with its fascinating history, it’s become one of Greece’s must-visit tourist locations.
