About Albertina Museum

The Albertina Museum in Vienna is one of the most renowned art museums in Austria, combining centuries of art history with a focus on modern and contemporary works.

The museum is housed in a grand neoclassical palace which was originally a Habsburg residence (one of the noble and ruling families of Austria) and the museum has an extensive collection of drawings, prints, and photographs, making it one of the largest and most significant print rooms in the world.

The property itself was designed by Emperor Franz Joseph in the 19th century and is a blend of classical architecture and modern design. The museum’s entrance is a modern addition in the Soravia Wing, which contrasts with the palace's traditional facade.

The Permanent Collections

The museum’s core collection includes works from great masters such as Dürer, Michelangelo, Rubens, Monet, Degas, and Picasso. It also features 20th-century and contemporary art by artists like Warhol, Basquiat, and Klimt.

  • Graphic Art Collection: The museum's graphic art collection is among the largest in the world and is comprised of works from mediaeval to modern times. Visitors can see famous pieces like Dürer’s “Young Hare” and Raphael’s studies.
  • Habsburg State Rooms: The museum is located in the Albertina Palace, which was once a Habsburg residence. Several of the lavishly decorated rooms are also open to view which feature original 19th-century interiors, and provide a glimpse into imperial life!

Temporary Exhibitions

In addition to its permanent exhibits, the Albertina also frequently hosts temporary exhibitions which feature internationally acclaimed modern and contemporary artists. The exhibitions constantly rotate, offering something new to enjoy for those that visit frequently.
