About Aquarium of the Bay

Aquarium of the Bay is on the famous and historical PIER 39. The aquarium is small but still offers a fun visit.

Aquarium of the Bay is split into several sections which include:

Under The Bay - Underwater Tunnels

In this section you will find two underwater tunnels to explore! The Near Shore Tunnel and the Sharks of Alcatraz Tunnel! The tunnels are home to some local marine life and when we say local, we mean very local! The species in the two tunnels would normally be found in the San Francisco Bay area!

In the Near Shore Tunnel you can find…

  • Rockfish
  • Garibaldi
  • Eastern Pacific Red Octopus, amongst others.

In the Sharks of Alcatraz Tunnel… guess what you can find!...

  • Sharks!
  • Rays
  • Sturgeons, and others!
Touch The Bay

This area of the aquarium is split into several smaller sections and it lets you get a little more hands-on with some of the residents and touch them in their shallow pools and displays! You can find in here:

Touch pools
  • Bat Rays
  • Skates
  • Leopard Sharks
  • Tidepool animals, such as sea stars, anemones and sea cucumbers!
Bay Lab (home to land animals)
  • Chinchillas
  • Tortoises
  • Frogs
River Otter

This area is home to some cute and playful river otters! Did you know that river otters are a sign of a clean healthy water system as that is where they like to live, in clean water systems!
