About Barcelona Aquarium
Barcelona Aquarium or 'L'Aquarium de Barcelona', is one of the must-visit attractions in the city that all can enjoy and proudly holds the title of the largest Mediterranean-themed aquarium in the world!
The aquarium is home to around 11,000 aquatic animals from over 400 different species including penguins, which are a firm favourite! The penguins are typically fed around 11:30 and 16:30, so try to catch one of the feeding sessions if you can!
Habitats to explore at the aquarium
- The Mediterranean Section: A major of the aquarium with 16 different tanks that are home to sharks, rays, ocean sunfish, eels and lots and lots of fish! the section is also home to the impressive Oceanarium which is a major highlight of the aquarium. A huge tank with just under 4-million litres of water in it and has sharks, rays and thousands of fish!
- Underwater Tunnel: Enjoy the 80-metre-long glass tunnel in the Oceanarium section under the main tank and be surrounded by sharks, eels, rays and fish!
- Tropical Seas: Various aquariums with tropical sharks, reefs, corals, seahorses and lots of colourful fish!
- Planeta Aqua: Shows how various creatures adapt to changing ecosystems.
- Explora! Children's Area, Where they can learn about various marine animals with touch and interactive elements.
The marine life at the aquarium are picked to represent different ecosystems from around the world and designed to allow each species to thrive in an aquarium created that matches their natural habitat. You can explore ecosystems from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Caribbean, and the icy Antarctic!
The aquarium is also dedicated to education and conservation and it operates a renowned sea turtle rehabilitation centre and works with marine biologists and local veterinarians to rehabilitate injured sea turtles.
