Benagil Caves & Coastline Tours Tickets and Information
{{ticket-block-triple}}
The Benagil Caves in the Algarve region of southern Portugal are one of the most famous and picturesque natural attractions in the country. They are situated near the small fishing village of Benagil, which is where the name comes from.
The Cave Formation and Structure
- The caves form part of the region's incredible limestone cliffs, which have been shaped over millions of years by the relentless forces of wind and water. The most famous cave, often referred to simply as the "Benagil Cave" or "Algar de Benagil," features a massive dome-like interior with a large circular hole at the top, known as the "eye" or "skylight." This natural skylight allows sunlight to stream into the cave, creating a magical play of light on the golden sands and turquoise waters inside.
Accessing the Caves
You can only access the caves from the water, so the popular options are:
- By Boat: The most common way to visit the Benagil Caves is by boat which picks you up from the local towns like Portimão, Carvoeiro, and Albufeira. Our most popular ticket is from Portimão. Click HERE for ticket details. The ticket includes a full caves circuit tour which lasts around 90-minutes. Or a second option Click HERE for ticket details which includes Benagil Caves and Praia da Marinha. We also offer a magical Sunrise Boat tour of the caves as well, again from Portimão. Click HERE to see that ticket option.
- By Kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP): For those seeking a more adventurous experience, you can opt for a kayak tour instead. Click HERE to see the Kayak Tour Option or for those with a bit more energy that wish to paddleboard to the caves, click HERE to see that ticket option!
- Swimming: While it is technically possible to swim to the caves from the nearby Benagil Beach, this is not recommended due to the strong currents and boat traffic in the area.
Best Time to Visit Benagil Caves
- The best time to visit the Benagil Caves is during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (May to September). Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal to avoid the crowds and enjoy the cave's natural beauty in a more serene setting.
Visiting the Benagil Caves is a highlight of any trip to the Algarve as they offer such an unforgettable experience of natures’ natural beauty.
