About Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

The Capilano Suspension Bridge is one of Vancouver's most iconic attractions, offering you an amazing experience in amazing natural scenery. The bridge spans 137 metres (450 feet) across and hangs 70 metres (230 feet) above the Capilano River, offering a unique vantage point to appreciate the beauty of British Columbia’s temperate rainforest.

The bridge was originally built in 1889 by George Grant Mackay, who was a Scottish civil engineer. It was first made of hemp ropes and cedar planks but was later rebuilt in 1903 with steel cables in order to make it stronger and safer as it grew to become one of the area’s most popular attractions! Over the years, the bridge and the surrounding park have been enhanced to offer more attractions which now include:

  1. Treetops Adventure: A series of smaller suspension bridges that take you high up into the treetops of the towering Douglas firs, offering an incredible view of the canopy.
  2. CliffWalk: A fun cantilevered walkway that hugs the cliff’s edge and offers amazing views of the surrounding forest and river.
  3. Story Centre: This is where you can learn about the history of the park and its connection to the indigenous peoples of the area.
  4. Kia’palano: An exhibit that highlights the culture and history of the First Nations people, with authentic totem poles and interpretive information.
  5. Rainforest Ecological Displays: Throughout the park, you’ll find informative displays about the rainforest ecosystem, offering insight into the flora and fauna of the area.

The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is a great place to visit for all ages. A fun family day out in nature to get the kids off their screens! The bridge is open year-round and offers special events at certain times of the year such as the Canyon Lights which normally runs from late November to mid-January, when the park is transformed into a winter wonderland, with the bridge and surrounding areas covered with thousands of twinkling lights, which look incredible as it goes dark!
