About The Caves of Nerja
The Caves of Nerja (Cuevas de Nerja) were discovered in 1959 by a group of local boys and are now one of Granada’s most captivating attractions! The caves offer a journey through history, art, and natural beauty, making them a must-see destination in the area.
What You Get To See Inside the Caves of Nerja
- Beautiful Rock Formations: The caves are renowned for their amazing stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are amongst the largest in the world.
- The Hall of the Cataclysm: The chamber is home to the tallest stalagmite ever recorded, which stands at 32 meters high and 13 meters wide at its base!
- Prehistoric Cave Paintings: You can also see the ancient artwork that dates back to over 40,000 years ago and depicts animals and human life.
- The Concert Hall: A section of the cave is used as a natural auditorium and hosts concerts and events that take advantage of the excellent acoustics!
- The Columns of Hercules: The incredible striking natural pillars are an iconic feature of the caves.
- The Hall of the Cascade: Featuring an amazing flowstone cascade, the hall is a photographer’s dream!
- Archaeological Finds: Some areas display artefacts and remains that provide insight into the lives of early humans.
The Caves of Nerja combine natural wonder, historical intrigue, and artistic splendour, making them an unmissable destination in Granada and the reason why they have grown to be so popular. We strongly recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket (the caves are cool), and a camera for capturing the amazing views!
