About Church of San Nicolás Valencia
The Church of San Nicolás in Valencia is one of the most stunning examples of Gothic and Baroque architecture in Spain and has the nickname of the "Sistine Chapel of Valencia," which you will understand when you see it.
It’s unlikely you will have seen a church like this before. Famous for its simply breath-taking interior, which is covered with intricate frescoes and beautiful artwork. It’s common for visitors to enter and simply say “WOW”!
Originally built in the 13th century shortly after King James I of Aragon reconquered Valencia from the Moors, it was constructed on the site of an earlier Roman temple which was dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of sailors, and to Saint Peter Martyr.
Over the centuries it's had various renovations, with the most significant transformation taking place in the 17th century when it was covered with the elaborate Baroque frescoes that you can see and enjoy today.
Its Architecture
- Gothic Structure: The original Gothic structure is still evident, especially in the pointed arches and ribbed vaults.
- Baroque Frescoes: The church is famous for its interior and the Baroque frescoes, which cover over 2,000 square metres. The frescoes were completed by Dionís Vidal under the direction of Antonio Palomino, a renowned Spanish Baroque painter.
- Vaulted Ceiling: The vaulted ceiling is another incredible feature and it depicts scenes from the lives of Saint Nicholas and Saint Peter Martyr, as well as various biblical stories.
- Restoration: In 2016, a major restoration project was completed, which carefully revived the vivid colours of the frescoes and brought the church back to it’s former glory.
Things to See In The Church
- Chapel of the Communion: A beautiful side chapel which is dedicated to the Eucharist, and features intricate decorations and has a serene atmosphere.
- Main Altar: The Baroque main altar serves as the focal point of the church.
- Organ: The historic organ, which is still in use today, is a highlight. Occasionally, the church hosts organ recitals and other musical events.
The Church of San Nicolás is in the historic centre of Valencia, so it’s within walking distance of other major attractions like the Central Market and the Silk Exchange (Lonja de la Seda).
