El Caminito del Rey, which translates to "The King's Little Path," (named after King Alfonso XIII) is one of Spain's most thrilling hiking experiences!
The path is found in the incredible coastal cliffs of Málaga and the historic walkway offers an exhilarating combination of natural beauty, history, and adrenaline for those brave enough!
El Caminito del Rey is a 7.7-kilometer-long walkway that is pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge! It was originally built in the early 20th century to allow workers to transport materials to the nearby hydroelectric power plants that were being built. Once the plants were completed (in 1921) the path then fell into disrepair over the years and was eventually closed to the public due to safety reasons in the year 2000.
However, in 2011, the government of Andalusia along with the local government in Malaga decided to restore the walk so people could enjoy it! The project took 4 years and in 2015, it was finally reopened to the public! It’s now an amazing hiking trail which traverses cliffside paths, crosses hanging bridges, and offers incredible panoramic views of the Gaitanes Gorge!
It is safe but it isn't for the faint hearted!
