Set in the estate of Keukenhof Castle is Keukenhof Gardens, a 79 acre estate where for around 10-weeks a year, becomes awash with colour as more than 7 million bulbs start to bloom to create amazing displays, or as the flower producers call it, their “living catalogue”.
Keukenhof had its first show in 1950. It was set up by a group of local flower growers and businessmen in a bid to show off their flowers. It was also opened to the public and was an instant success.
Keukenhof now regularly welcomes more than 1 million visitors each year. Normally open between mid-March to mid-May, Keukenhof, or to use its nickname, the ‘Garden of Europe’ welcomes visitors from all over the world who come to enjoy the amazing displays of beauty put on by the flower growers and Keukenhof gardeners.
The flowers are planted by colour, size and height in order to create the spectacular displays. They are planted at different times to try and ensure a constant bloom during the short two-month period which Keukenhof is open for.
Although the majority of the displays are tulips, there are also other flowers and plants on display at Keukenhof.
It's a firm family favourite for a day out. Something that all ages can enjoy and another reason why people travel from all over the world to experience and enjoy the annual flower festival.
