Experience the art collection of the once-mighty Habsburg family at KHM
The Kunsthistorisches Museum KHM in Vienna is one of the most important and impressive art museums in the world. It was established in 1891 by Emperor Franz Joseph I, and was designed to house the extensive art collection of the Habsburg dynasty (of which he was part of), who were one of the richest families in the country as well as being a long serving ruling family through multiple generations.
The museum is located on the famous Ringstraße boulevard, opposite the equally famous 'Museumsquartier' and near the 'Hofburg Palace' (home to the Spanish Riding School). The building itself is also a masterpiece, having been designed in a Renaissance Revival style by architects Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer.
The Habsburg’s vast fortune enabled them to grow their collection whenever they wanted to with whichever pieces came to the market. The museum isn't just a place to view art but also offers a rich cultural experience, which is deeply connected to the history and heritage of Vienna. Whether you’re an art connoisseur or just a casual visitor, the museum promises a memorable visit.
