About The London Eye

The London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, or the Lastminute.com London Eye (as Lastminute.com are the current sponsors), is one of London's most iconic landmarks.

It was constructed as part of the millennium celebrations in 1999 and was officially opened to the public in March 2000. The London Eye was actually only intended to be a temporary structure for the millennium celebration and a short time afterwards, but due to its popularity, it has become a permanent fixture on the London skyline!

The wheel stands at a height of 135 metres (443 feet) and has a diameter of 120 metres (394 feet). It was designed by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield, and it was built by a consortium of companies including British Airways.

The giant ferris wheel (not actually technically a ferris wheel) offers you amazing views of London's skyline from its glass capsules. Each capsule can hold up to 25 people, and the rotation of the wheel takes about 30 minutes, providing ample time for you to enjoy panoramic views of the city!

Landmarks in sight include:
  • The Houses of Parliament
  • Big Ben
  • St. Paul's Cathedral
  • Buckingham Palace, amongst others.

Enjoy your ride!
