About ZSL London Zoo
ZSL London Zoo in Regent's Park, is one of the world's oldest and most famous zoos! Home to around 15,000 animals from 750 different species from all over the world.
London Zoo is set up over three main zones, with several habitats in each which are designed to replicate the animals own natural environments. The zones and habitats are as follows:
London Zoo Zones
- Orange Zone
- Blue Zone
- Pink Zone
In the Orange Zone you will find the following habitats:
- In with the Monkeys - home to the zoos squirrel monkeys!
- Blackburn Pavilion - home to various bird species and full of song as the birds sing!
- Tiny Giants - home to spiders and other creepy crawlies!
- Animal Adventure - home to the zoos specially designed area for younger visitors with a fun play section and animals including meerkats, porcupines, pigs, coatis, alpacas, llamas and goats! The animals spaces have lower barriers in the Animal Adventure zone making it feel a bit more special.
- The Farmyard - home to farmyard favourites including goats, pigs and llamas!
- Three Island Pond - home to the zoos beautiful pink flamingos!
- Butterfly Paradise - walk through the warm butterfly zone and see the colourful butterflies floating gently through the space!
- Giants of the Galápagos - home to the zoos tortoises.
- Penguin Island - another firm favourite - the penguin zone!
- Activity Cove
In the Blue Zone you will find the following habitats:
- The Cassons - home to the zoos Red river hogs!
- Tiger Territory - one of the zoos most popular habitats and home to the Sumatran tiger family, one of the rarest tigers in the world.
- Outback - home to the kangaroos and ostrich!
- Gorilla Kingdom - the zoos troop of western lowland gorillas can be found in this habitat.
- Bird Safari - home to a range of birds from the African continent, including scarlet ibis, red-crested turaco, emerald dove and the endangered Vietnamese pheasant, which hasn't been seen in the wild for for than 25 years now.
- Komodo Dragon House - home to the mighty lizard, the largest reptile in the world! With their razor sharp teeth and toxic saliva, you get to enjoy the komodo dragon from behind the specially designed glass panel!
- The Secret Life of Reptiles & Amphibians - home to the zoos reptile collection which includes lizards, snakes, frogs, turtles, crocodiles and more!
In the Pink Zone you will find the following habitats:
- Into Africa - this habitat is the zoos mini safari! You can spot the giraffes, zebra, okapi, pygmy hippo, warthog, and African wild dogs in this section!
- Mongooses and Otters
- Nightlife & Rainforest - A special habitat for the animals that come out at night! A darker area so it feels more natural. The animals include: potto, pygmy slow loris, naked mole-rat, slender loris, malagasy giant jumping rat and everyone’s favourite, the bushbaby! You will notice most of the residents here have larger eyes, which is of course to help improve their vision with them being nocturnal animals!
- In with the Lemurs - home to the zoos ring-tailed lemurs & Alaotran gentle lemur
- Monkey Valley - the amazing new habitat with the path through the monkey zone! Watch them swinging overhead as they come and see whose visiting them!

Interesting Facts About London Zoo
- First Public Aquarium: The world’s first public aquarium, the Fish House, opened at London Zoo in 1853.
- Oldest Scientific Zoo: Opened in 1828, London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo. Originally intended for scientific study, it only opened to the public in 1847.
- Charles Darwin's Visit: The famous naturalist Charles Darwin was a frequent visitor to the zoo. His observations of the animals there, particularly the orangutans, influenced his ideas on evolution.
- Home to the First Reptile House: London Zoo was the first to open a Reptile House in 1849, which allowed people to see reptiles up close for the first time.
- Penguin Pool: The zoo's Penguin Pool, built in 1934, is a modernist architectural icon. Although it is no longer used to house penguins, it's still a major attraction.
- Endangered Species Focus: London Zoo is heavily involved in conservation work, with breeding programs for endangered species like the Sumatran tiger, the western lowland gorilla, and the Asiatic lion.
- Winnie the Bear: The zoo was home to a Canadian black bear named Winnie, who was the inspiration for A.A. Milne’s famous character Winnie-the-Pooh.
- Escape of the Wolf: In 1952, a wolf named Lobo escaped from the zoo and wandered around Regent’s Park before being safely recaptured. This event became a part of the zoo’s quirky history.
- King George IV Pets: King George IV transferred animals from the Royal Menagerie at the Tower of London to London Zoo because the menagerie had outgrown the Tower of London location!
