About Mandai Wildlife Reserve
Mandai Wildlife Reserve is the must-visit (in our opinion) wildlife reserve in Singapore. The reserve is split into 4 different sections which are:
- Singapore Zoo
- Singapore River Wonders
- Singapore Bird Paradise
- Singapore Night Safari
The zoo is home to a diverse range of animals covering from A-Z of the animal kingdom, from African Lions to Zebra's and lots in between! The zoo is set out over multiple habitats that aren't all caged or sectioned off like most zoo's around the world. Singapore Zoo has adopted a fresh approach of making the barriers between visitors and the animals more natural (where safe to do so!), which adds to the enjoyment of the experience as it makes you feel a lot closer to the animals as you pass by.
The habitats at the zoo include:
- Australasia - home to the kangaroos!
- Elephants of Asia - home to the herd of 5 female elephants.
- Fragile Forest - a fantastic biodome set up as a tropical rainforest area and home to multiple species including bords, sloths, tamarin, and many more.
- Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia - home to ibex, baboons, jackals and others
- Orangutan Island - An fantastic open space home to the unique orangutan exhibit where they walk freely.
- Primate Kingdom - home to 39 different species of primate!
- Kidz World - one of our favourite spaces, as its home to the petting zoo, which we love! You can find goats, horses, chickens, guinea pigs and more!
- Reptile Kingdom - home to lizards and other reptiles of various shapes and sizes!
- RedTopia - home to snakes and other amphibians.
- Tortoise Shell-ter - home to the zoo's tortoise collection!
- Treetops Trail - home to Siamang, mousedeer and False gharial, amongst others.
- Wild Africa - home to some big cats such as African lions as well as African painted dogs, zebra's and cheetah's.
The Singapore River Wonders part of Mandai Wildlife Reserve is equally as impressive. This section concentrates more on the aquatic world and the animals that live in or near water.
Like the zoo, River Wonders is split up into various different sections which have their own animals living harmoniously! The sections at River Wonders include:
- Amazon River Quest - here you will find Brazilian Tapir, Jaguar & Giant Anteater.
- Amazonian Encounters - in this section you will find Azora's agouti, Golden-headed lion tamarin & White-lipped tamarin.
- Amazon Flooded Forest - home to Giant river otters, Altum angelfish, Arapaima, Black-finned pacu, Bolivian ram cichlid, Discus, Electric eel, Manatee, Oscar, Red-tailed catfish and Striped silver dollar.
- Congo River - a section full of beautiful tropical fish, including various cichlids, catfish, Red spot callochromis and Tailspot ctenopoma.
- Ganges River - in this section you will find Indian gharial, frog-faced softshell turtle and the goonch catfish.
- Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest - home to Giant Panda's, this exhibit is 1500m2 which actually makes it the largest panda exhibit in Southeast Asia. The space is home to two Giant panda, Kai Kai and Jai Jai.
- Mary River - this section is home to Australian lungfish, Banded archerfish and Mudskippers! The Mary River is one of the few places in the world where freshwater meets sea water, so these creatures have adapted to live in the environment. The lungfish can also breath air for small amounts of time using a specially adapted swim bladder for when they live in stagnant water in the wild.
- Mekong River - this section is home to birds and fish and rays. Based on the Mekong River in the wild, which is fed by melting snow (in the wild). You will find Arowana, Burmese archerfish, Eurasian spoonbill, Fire eel, Giant freshwater stingray, various different catfish, Painted stork, carp, herons and wallago.
- Nile River - You will find more fish in this section including African arowana, African pike, African tigerfish, Giraffe catfish, Goliath tigerfish, Hornet tilapia, Lapradei bichir and Saddled bichir.
- River Gems - In this section you will find fresh water fish, which includes various different colourful tetras as well as pufferfish and others.
Singapore Bird Paradise is home to thousands of birds from all over the world and like the other parts of Mandai, Bird Paradise is also set into sections which separates the birds into how they would be found in the wild.
The Singapore Bird Paradise Sections include:
- Amazonian Jewels - home to beautiful toucans and other exotic birds that can be found in the amazon.
- Shaw Foundation Australian Outback - home to around 30 species of birds from the Australian outback including the Common emu, the beautiful Golden-shouldered parrot, the laughing kookaburra, Major Mitchell's cockatoo, Masked lapwing, Red-tailed black cockatoo and Tawny frogmouth, amongst others.
- Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa - in this section you will find Great blue turaco, Grey parrot, Lesser flamingo, Red-crested turaco and the beautiful Superb starling.
- Hong Leong Foundation Crimson Wetlands - this section has been designed to replicate the Crimson wetlands in Latin America and with it, you will find some of the most colourful birds in the world, including American flamingos, various different breeds of macaws as well as Roseate spoonbills, the beautiful Scarlet ibis and the Sun parakeet. You will be hit by the colours of the rainbow as you see the birds in this section.
- Kuok Group Wings of Asia - this section is set up to replicate a terraced rice field where the birds would normally live. You can walk along the paths and watch the birds from the Balinese-style pavilions. In the area you will see some larger birds which include storks, cranes and herons and they walk amongst the shallow pools that have been created.
- Lory Loft - a wonderful area with a walkway that visitors can cross with parrots flying all around. Enjoy the spectacular colours.
- Mysterious Papua - home to around 25 species of birds that would normally live in the rainforest. You will see Palm cockatoo, Salmon-crested cockatoo, Southern cassowary and Sumba eclectus in this section.
- Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove - most of us love penguins and you can enjoy them in this fun section!
- Songs of the Forest - If you enjoy the sound of bird song - this is the section for you. Home to straw-headed bullbul, Bali mynah, Asian starlings and laughing thrushes, which are all known for their beautiful sounds.
- Winged Sanctuary - the last section in Singapore Bird Paradise is the Winged Sanctuary. Here you will find some larger birds that are also full of colour.
The Singapore Night Safari is the world's first night safari and its a great activity to do the with kids as it's not something you can do in many other places around the world. The Night Safari, like the other parts of Mandai Wildlife Reserve, is also spilt up and set out in different sections. The sections all have very subtle lighting so you can see the animals, don't worry. The light doesn't ruin it though, its still dark, but with very clever lighting!
- Tasmanian Devil Trail - home to some animals that you would normally find in the likes of Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea, such as Tasmanian Devil, North Island Brown Kiwi, Morepork owl, Common brushtail possum, Sugar glider, Woylie and Wallaby. You can also hear zoo keepers talks, if you would like to. They are at designated times each day for the different animals.
- East Lodge Trail - A habitat crossover of Africa and Asia. You will see animals from both in this section living happily together. Animals such as red river hogs, babirusa, Aardvark, Bongo's, sloth bear and Spotted hyaena.
- Safari Tram Adventure - We opted for this when we visited, so can confirm its great fun. The tram takes you around the park so you can enjoy the major zones including the incredible Asian elephants from the comfort of the tram. The tram will stop at the zones giving you time to enjoy them and watch the animals in the habitats. This is a great idea for those who don't fancy walking.
- Leopard Trail - Here you will find some big cats as well as other animals including leopards (after its name!), lions, civets, binturong, owls, fruit bats, Indian rhinoceros, the Malayan flying fox, prickly porcupines, serval and the cute Senegal bushbaby.
- Fishing Cat Trail - This section is set out to replicate a trek in the wild and in the section you will find fishing cats as well as giant anteaters and armadillo!
