About Melbourne Museum
The Melbourne Museum is one of Australia's largest and most important museums and a great place to enjoy a family day out! It’s a cultural and educational hub that has a wide array of exhibits to enjoy that span natural history, indigenous culture, science, and social history and more.
Exhibits (subject to change):
- Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre: A section dedicated to the history, culture, and traditions of Australia’s Indigenous peoples, particularly the Koorie people of south-eastern Australia. It offers interactive exhibits, cultural artefacts, and storytelling.
- Science and Life Gallery: The gallery explores natural history, with exhibits on dinosaurs, fossils, marine life, and geology. The star attraction is "The Forest Gallery," a living, indoor forest that demonstrates Victoria’s biodiversity!
- Mind and Body Gallery: This area delves into human biology, health, and the mind, featuring interactive displays that explore the complexities of the human body and brain.
- Melbourne Story: A detailed narrative of Melbourne’s social history from its Indigenous beginnings to its development as a modern metropolis. The exhibit includes iconic artefacts, such as the Royal Exhibition Building model and Phar Lap, a famous racehorse from the 1930s.
- The Forest Gallery: An incredible piece of Victoria’s Mountain landscape which includes eucalypts, ferns, plants and wildlife, with conditions that mirror those found on the mountain such as misty air and dam earth beneath your feet! Spot the wildlife, enjoy the amazing plants and take deep breaths!
- IMAX Theatre: The Melbourne Museum also has an IMAX Theatre which shows both 2D and 3D films, including nature documentaries and educational features!
- Temporary Exhibitions: The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions that range from international art, history, and science exhibitions to local cultural displays.
- Children’s Gallery: A space designed for young children, featuring interactive and educational exhibits that allow hands-on learning about the world around them.
- Bug Alive! A fun section that allows you to discover the world of bugs and creepy crawlies! Did you know that there are over 150 million insects for each human on earth! See, hear and smell the bugs in Bug Alive! They’ve even got a room with live specimens including tarantulas, redbacks and orbweavers!
The museum is in Carlton Gardens which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and shares the grounds with the historic Royal Exhibition Building. You can explore the gardens, which are beautifully landscaped with fountains, sculptures, and a variety of native and exotic plants.
