About Neuschwanstein Castle

The enchanting 19th-century Neuschwanstein Castle. The fairy-tale-like castle that sits on top of a Bavarian hill overlooking the land and one of the most famous and recognisable castles in the world.

The castle was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who as it happens, was also known as the "Fairytale King" or the "Swan King."! He had a deep fascination with mediaeval legends and sought to create a grandiose and romantic castle that reflected his idealised vision of the Middle Ages.

Although it was never finished for him, the king had built the castle as a personal retreat, so it was built in a strategic and dramatic location atop a rugged hill overlooking the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria for him to enjoy the views of his kingdom.

The castle's design is a blend of various architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine and was influenced by the works of Richard Wagner, the renowned composer who also happened to be a close friend of King Ludwig II, as well as by various romanticised interpretations of mediaeval themes.

With good reason, Neuschwanstein Castle is often described as having a fairy tale-like look, with its soaring towers, turrets, and ornate decorations. Its picturesque setting amidst the Alpine landscape further enhances its enchanting appearance.

The interior of the castle is equally as impressive. Its rooms are lavishly decorated and the Throne Room, Singers' Hall, and King's Bedroom feature intricate wood carvings, colourful murals, and elaborate furnishings, as you would expect for a castle built for a king!

Today, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Germany's most popular tourist attractions and attracts millions of visitors each year from around the world. It is widely recognized as a symbol of romanticism and serves as a testament to King Ludwig II's vision and imagination.

Neuschwanstein Castle is said to have inspired Walt Disney for his designs of the iconic Cinderella Castle at Disneyland and other Disney theme parks. Its fairy-tale-like appearance and association with romanticism align closely with the themes of many Disney movies.
