The enchanting 19th-century Neuschwanstein Castle in the village of Hohenschwangau. The fairy-tale-like castle that sits on top of a Bavarian hill overlooking the land and one of the most famous and recognisable castles in the world!
The castle was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869, who as it happens, was also known as the "Fairy tale King" or the "Swan King."! He had a deep fascination with mediaeval legends and sought to create a grandiose and romantic castle that reflected his idealised vision of the Middle Ages.
The king wanted the castle for a personal retreat, not as an official royal residence, so it was built in a strategic and dramatic location on top of a rugged hill overlooking the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria for him to enjoy the views of his kingdom.
The castle's design is a blend of various architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine and was influenced by the works of Richard Wagner, the renowned composer who also happened to be a close friend of King Ludwig II, as well as by various romanticised interpretations of mediaeval themes.
Even though the castle was never actually finished, due to King Ludwig II's death in 1886, Neuschwanstein Castle is still often described as having a fairy tale-like appearance with good reason, its got soaring towers, turrets, and ornate decorations. Its picturesque setting amidst the Alpine landscape also adds to the fairy-tale appearance.
The castle was opened to the public soon after his death in order to help pay of the debts that had accrued during its construction.
The interior of the castle is equally as impressive. Designed with more than 200 rooms, of which only around 15 were fully finished, the rooms are lavishly decorated. The Throne Room, Singers' Hall, and King's Bedroom feature intricate wood carvings, colourful murals, and elaborate furnishings, as you would expect for a castle built for a king!
Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Germany's most popular tourist attractions and it is widely recognized as a symbol of romanticism and serves as a testament to King Ludwig II's vision and imagination.
Neuschwanstein Castle is said to have also inspired Walt Disney and his designs of the famous Cinderella Castle at Disneyland and other Disney theme parks. Its fairy-tale-like appearance and association with romanticism align closely with the themes of many Disney movies.
All Neuschwanstein Castle entry tickets include a guided tour, as that is the only option available. You are not allowed to wander around the castle by themselves. The tours mainly focus on the 3rd & 4th floors of the castle, which where designed to be the King's quarters.
We strongly suggest booking tickets in advance for the castle, especially during peak season.
