The Palacio de Dueñas is a national monument in Seville, an historic palace renowned for its beauty, its blend of Gothic and Moorish architecture, its rich history and its manicured gardens.
Dating back to the 15th century, the palace is named after the 'Monastery of Santa Maria de las Dueñas', and was originally constructed for the noble Pineda family who were forced to sell it as Doña Catalina de Ribera had been kidnapped by the Moors and they needed to use the funds to recover her.
Over the centuries it has been owned by various noble families and used as both private residence and even as a guest house at one point. It was also the birthplace of Spanish poet, Antonio Machado, whom was born there in 1875.
In the 20th century, it came into the possession of the ‘Dukes of Alba’, one of Spain's oldest and most distinguished noble families and it’s currently owned by the ‘House of Alba’. Due to its noble history, the palace has welcomed many influential figures including royalty.
Its architecture is a blend of different styles which reflect its long history of modifications, refurbishments and additions over time. It features elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The palace is characterised by its grand façade, intricate stonework, and beautiful, peaceful courtyards.
The palace is also home to collection of art and antiques from the 16th century onwards with over 1400 pieces, which include paintings, furniture, tapestries, sculptures and other pieces.
Another of the highlights is its extensive patios and gardens which are spread over several acres and include tree-lined paths surrounded by orange trees, fountains, quaint courtyards wit marble columns, sculptures, and colourful flowers which can be enjoyed as you stroll around and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
