About The Pyramids of Güímar
The Pyramids of Güímar sit on the eastern coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The archaeological site attracts people from around the world as, like various other sites around the world, it is still unknown how the pyramids that stand on the site were built and why as they remian shrouded in mystery and the subject of much debate amongst scholars and historians!
The pyramids are part of an Ethnographic Park, which has been designated to preserve and protect the area. At the park you can see:
- Main Pyramid Complex: You can explore the pyramids and learn about theories regarding their construction.
- The Museum: The museum houses artefacts and exhibitions that relate to the pyramids’ history and connections to ancient civilizations.
- Botanical Gardens: Home to native Canarian plants and exotic flora.
- The Poison Garden: A unique attraction with plants known for their toxic properties.
- Walking Paths: Scenic trails that provide panoramic views of the landscape.
The origin of the pyramids remains debated:
- Agricultural Purpose: Many believe the pyramids were constructed in the 19th century as part of agricultural terracing.
- Astronomical Alignment: The structures align with the sun’s solstices, which leads some to suggest they served a ceremonial purpose.
- Thor Heyerdahl’s Theory: The renowned Norwegian explorer linked the pyramids to ancient transoceanic cultures, which suggests a possible connection to the Americas or Egypt.
- But nobody actually knows!
