About Rotterdam Zoo
Rotterdam Zoo, which is also known locally as “Diergaarde Blijdorp”, is one of the most popular attractions in the Netherlands, and having been established in 1857, it’s also one of the oldest and most renowned zoos in Europe!
The zoo is home to a diverse range of animals covering from A-Z (Asian elephants to Zebras!), as well as having beautiful gardens, and being highly conservation-minded, multiple educational exhibits giving information about the conservation programs they are part of. The zoo is a perfect destination for families and animal lovers.
Popular Rotterdam Zoo Zones Include
- Aquarium: Explore the world’s oceans at Rotterdam Zoo with the vast aquarium. Split into two sections, you can enjoy the North Sea Zone which is home to sharks and thousands of species of fish. Then there is the Caribbean Coast Zone, where you can find coral reefs and rays and more fish that naturally live in the area such as surgeonfish!
- African Plains: Where you can find giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and vultures! They live in a habitat designed to replicate their own natural environments.
- African Jungle: You can find the zoo’s pygmy hippopotamus along with okapis and bongos in this section. Again, the habitat is designed to replicate their natural habitat so they feel at home.
- Asian Corridor: A firm favourite to visit as its home to the zoo’s Asian elephants, the beautiful Sumatran tigers and the Asian lions in this section.
- Artisanal Gardens: Beautifully landscaped gardens with exotic plants and themed areas.
- Himalayan Peaks: Where you can spot the strong Indian rhino, as well as red pandas and tufted deer.
- Nature Nearby: In this tranquil area of the zoo, you can find a peaceful pond with a lovely bridge over it where you can see the zoo’s pelicans relaxing on the water.
Conservation Efforts
Rotterdam Zoo is heavily involved in conservation projects worldwide and participates in breeding programs for endangered species as well as working on projects to protect natural habitats, so you know your ticket entrance fee is going towards good causes.
