About Sacromonte Abbey

Sacromonte Abbey (Abadía del Sacromonte), sits in the hills of Mount Valparaíso outside Granada and is a hidden gem rich with history, culture, and spiritual significance. The Abbey overlooks the picturesque landscapes of the city as well as offering amazing views of the iconic Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The Abbey was founded in the early 17th century after a series of Christian relics known as the "Lead Books" (Libros Plúmbeos) were discovered in the nearby Valparaíso Hill caves. The books referred to Saint Caecilius, Saint Ctesiphon and Saint Hesychius' martyrdom and were said to affirm Christian faith while incorporating aspects of the Arabic and Islamic culture that once thrived in the region. Although the Vatican later declared them a forgery, the abbey itself became a revered pilgrimage site.

The abbey consists of three main sections, the Abbey, the college (one of the earliest private colleges in Europe) and the seminary. The architecture of the abbey is a mixture of Renaissance and Baroque styles, with various chapels, crypts, and courtyards that make it a peaceful yet inspiring place to explore. Its long history is intertwined with the Christian reconquest of Granada and the complex religious history that shaped Andalusia.

What You Can See at The Abbey

  • Crypts and Caves: Underneath the abbey lie a network of caves, believed to have been used by the first Christian martyrs in Granada, which you can see. It's said Saint Caecilius was martyred here, who is now the Patron Saint of Granada.
  • Renaissance and Baroque Architecture: The abbey’s elegant facades and interior designs are a testament to the architectural movements of the time. The chapels are also covered with religious art.
  • Santo Sepulcro Chapel: This chapel is one of the holiest places within the abbey and is known for its intricate design and religious significance.
  • Sacromonte Viewpoint: The panoramic views from the abbey offer an amazing perspective of Granada’s historical sites, including the famous Alhambra and the Albayzín quarter.
  • Library and Archives: The abbey houses a vast collection of religious texts, manuscripts, and books, some of which date back to its founding.
  • Museum of Religious Art: Exhibits featuring religious art, including paintings, sculptures, and vestments, are on display within the abbey. The museum also has one of the oldest maps of the area, which is fascinating to see.

Sacromonte Abbey is a must-visit for history lovers, religious pilgrims, and anyone wanting to experience the spiritual heart of Granada. Whether you're fascinated by the mysteries of the "Lead Books" or simply wish to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere the abbey offers and stunning views, the abbey is a lovely place to visit.
