The Sacromonte Caves Museum is one of Granada's most fascinating cultural and historical attractions, offering a view of life and the traditions of the people who once lived in the caves of the Sacromonte neighbourhood.
The caves are in the Valparaiso hills just outside the city and the museum location also provides amazing views of the Alhambra and the Albaicín quarter. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the cave-dwelling Roma gypsy and Spanish gypsy (known as Gitanos) community who lived in the area for centuries.
The caves themselves are a unique architectural feature. They were carved into the soft limestone of the hillside by the gypsies and provided a naturally cool environment in the summer and warmth in the winter.
The museum consists of 10 reconstructed caves that have been faithfully restored to show the traditional lifestyle, tools, and crafts of the people who inhabited the region.
You can explore a variety of exhibits which are focused on different aspects of Sacromonte life:
