About Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens in Vienna is one of Europe's most stunning Baroque palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The palace, with its rich history, magnificent architecture, and vast gardens, offers a glimpse into the life of the Habsburg monarchs, particularly Empress Maria Theresa, who made it her summer residence. Because of it’s history, the palace is a major attraction in Vienna.

Palace History & Architecture

Schönbrunn Palace was originally designed in the 17th century but the Empress Maria Theresa, later transformed it into the opulent Baroque residence that we see today, in the mid-18th century.

The palace, which is one of the largest in Europe, has a staggering 1,441 rooms, though only around 40 are actually open to the public during your tour. The interior is a Rococo design, with ornate frescoes, crystal chandeliers, and precious porcelain.

  1. The State Rooms: Your guide will take you to see the lavish state apartments, which include the Emperor's and Empress's private rooms, each decorated in exquisite Baroque and Rococo styles.
  2. The Great Gallery: The grand hall, which was used for court functions, is famous for its stunning ceiling frescoes and large windows which offer views of the gardens.
  3. The Hall of Mirrors: A highlight of the palace, this Hall of Mirrors reflects the grandeur of the Habsburg empire and was used for musical performances, which  included concerts by a young Mozart!
The Schönbrunn Gardens

The gardens at Schönbrunn are just as famous as the palace itself, offering a vast, beautifully landscaped area that spans over 500 acres with several famous features that include:

  1. The Neptune Fountain: Located at the foot of the hill, the grand fountain is a perfect photo spot and a testament to the Baroque grandeur of the gardens.
  2. The Gloriette: Is perched on a hilltop which overlooks the palace. The structure offers panoramic views of Vienna and houses a café where you can relax and enjoy a drink.
  3. The Maze and Labyrinth: A fun and engaging attraction, particularly for families, where you can explore and find your way through hedged mazes!
  4. The Orangery: The Schönbrunn Orangery, one of the largest in Europe, and it hosts various events and concerts throughout the year.
  5. The Palm House: A Victorian-style greenhouse with exotic plants from around the world, perfect for botany enthusiasts.
