About Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens in Vienna is one of Europe's most stunning Baroque palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The palace, with its rich history, magnificent architecture, and vast gardens, offers a glimpse into the life of the Habsburg monarchs, particularly Empress Maria Theresa, who made it her summer residence. Because of it’s history, the palace is a major attraction in Vienna.
Palace History & Architecture
Schönbrunn Palace was originally designed in the 17th century but the Empress Maria Theresa, later transformed it into the opulent Baroque residence that we see today, in the mid-18th century.
The palace, which is one of the largest in Europe, has a staggering 1,441 rooms, though only around 40 are actually open to the public during your tour. The interior is a Rococo design, with ornate frescoes, crystal chandeliers, and precious porcelain.
- The State Rooms: Your guide will take you to see the lavish state apartments, which include the Emperor's and Empress's private rooms, each decorated in exquisite Baroque and Rococo styles.
- The Great Gallery: The grand hall, which was used for court functions, is famous for its stunning ceiling frescoes and large windows which offer views of the gardens.
- The Hall of Mirrors: A highlight of the palace, this Hall of Mirrors reflects the grandeur of the Habsburg empire and was used for musical performances, which included concerts by a young Mozart!
The Schönbrunn Gardens
The gardens at Schönbrunn are just as famous as the palace itself, offering a vast, beautifully landscaped area that spans over 500 acres with several famous features that include:
- The Neptune Fountain: Located at the foot of the hill, the grand fountain is a perfect photo spot and a testament to the Baroque grandeur of the gardens.
- The Gloriette: Is perched on a hilltop which overlooks the palace. The structure offers panoramic views of Vienna and houses a café where you can relax and enjoy a drink.
- The Maze and Labyrinth: A fun and engaging attraction, particularly for families, where you can explore and find your way through hedged mazes!
- The Orangery: The Schönbrunn Orangery, one of the largest in Europe, and it hosts various events and concerts throughout the year.
- The Palm House: A Victorian-style greenhouse with exotic plants from around the world, perfect for botany enthusiasts.
