Singapore Zoo is a truly world-class zoo. Part of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, it's different to other zoos, as at Singapore Zoo they don’t use the conventional cages and barriers to keep the animals in, they use more natural barriers to create the habitats for the wildlife, which also allows visitors to enjoy the visit more as they feel as they though are truly in the animals’ world, which is quite a special feeling. An animal lovers paradise, as you feel up close and personal.
The zoo offers various different shows and performances for visitors to enjoy such as live sea lion performance, meet the zoo's young rhino, and discover countless other wonders.
Singapore Zoo is spread over 26 hectares (around 64 acres) and you can find around 300 different species at the zoo, which include:
The zoo is home to 'Orangutan Island' which is an incredible zone where the orangutans are free-roaming. In this zone you can chat with the zoo keepers during three daily sessions and learn fascinating insights about the beautiful gentle primates.
You can explore the 20,000 cubic meter biodome that is set up to mimic a tropical rainforest. The biodome is home to frogs, toucans, butterflies, lemurs, rays, ducks, flying foxes, cute little mousedeer and a variety of intriguing animals that you would find in tropical rainforest settings. Some you may have to look for as they camouflage themselves in the habitat, others may simply walk straight past you!
Feeling the heat - why not head to the Splash Safari held at the Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre and enjoy the sea lion show! If you sit towards the front, the star of the show often swims along the front of the tank and happily splashes the front rows! Watch the sea lion perform tricks such as balancing balls on the nose as well as jumps in the water and generally enjoying the attention from the crowd!
As animal lovers, we love this section! Its the petting zoo area of the park where you can get even closer to some of the residents and touch, stroke and feed them. The petting zoo has furry favourites such as rabbits, mini pigs, pygmy goats, falabellas (smallest breed of horse - I know, we didn't know either!), chickens, tortoises, guinea pigs and more! The Kidz Zone also includes other fun areas though as well, such as the Play Trees area, Splish Splash area and Animal Buddies area, where you can watch fun presentations by the zoo keepers!
In this section of the zoo you will find animals from the African continent that vary is shape and size! You can find big cats such as the majestic African lion and the beautiful cheetah. The section is also home to African painted dogs, Fossa, the tall giraffe's, peering meerkats, Red river hog, the strong White rhinoceros and some stripey zebras!
Home to the zoos beautiful herd of 5 all female elephants. Elephants live in herd's with a matriarch as the 'boss' and the herd at Singapore Zoo is no exception! Komali is the current matriarch and she is a Sri Lankan elephant. You can identify her by her pink spots on her trunk and ears.
This zone is home to reptiles and amphibians. You will find snakes and lizards and frogs and tortoises in the section. Some living harmoniously together and others by themselves in their own areas for safety reasons (so they don't attack the others!). Snake lovers will love this section! You can enjoy daily talks with the keepers. You can also spot the incredible colour changing chameleon, if he allows you to. He may disguise to blend in with where ever he is sitting, so look carefully! The section is home to Electric blue gecko, Gaboon viper, Golden poison frog, Green basilisk and Roti snake-necked turtle, amongst others.
If you time your visit well, you can enjoy watching and even help with feeding time with some of the animals! The animals have set feeding times, so you can plan your visit around them.
The Mandai Wildlife Reserve is an amazing place and something that visitors of all ages can truly enjoy. We suggest visiting all areas, which you can actually do all in the same day! We love the Night Safari as its a whole next perspective, watching the animals at night.
