The Tenerife Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) is one of the most iconic natural wonders of the Canary Islands. The tree is known for its ancient appearance and cultural significance and is often referred to as the ‘Millennium Tree’ due to its long lifespan.
The most famous example of the trees sits in the town of ‘Icod de los Vinos’, and the tree there is estimated to be between 800 and 1,000 years old, making it one of the oldest and largest dragon trees in the world!
In addition to the famous tree, the Botanical Gardens where it's located offer you a chance to explore the island’s other unique plants and trees, which include many endemic species that thrive in Tenerife’s diverse climate, from beautiful forests to arid plains. Tenerife has quite a unique terrain, given its small size.
Icod de los Vinos, the town where the ancient Tenerife Dragon Tree is found, sits on the northern side of Tenerife so it not only provides a view of the dragon tree but also a backdrop of spectacular landscapes, including views of Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak.
At the garden you can see the towering dragon tree, which reaches about 18 metres (59 feet) in height, and explore a small park around the tree full of other beautiful native plant species.
The tree was sacred to the ‘Guanches’, the aboriginal people of the Canary Islands because they believed the tree’s red sap, sometimes referred to as "dragon’s blood," had magical and healing properties!
