About The USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum is a maritime museum in San Diego on the USS Midway, a retired aircraft carrier that served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1992. The museum offers an incredible opportunity to look into naval aviation and the life of sailors aboard an aircraft carrier.
The Boats History
- USS Midway (CV-41): The ship was commissioned a week after the end of World War II and it went on to serve for 47 years, which makes it one of the longest-serving aircraft carriers in the US Navy!
- The USS Midway name: The ship is named after the Battle of Midway that took place in June 1942.
- Overseas Operations: It saw action in the Vietnam War and was a significant participant in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
- Decommissioning: The USS Midway was decommissioned in 1992 and opened as a museum in 2004.
What You See on Board
- Aircraft Collection: The museum boasts an amazing collection of over 30 restored aircraft, which range from World War II-era planes to modern jets, including an F/A-18 Hornet, F-14 Tomcat, and A-6 Intruder!
- Flight Deck: You can explore the flight deck, which is equipped with various aircraft and offers spectacular views of San Diego Bay. The flight deck is also the largest area on the ship and shows the complexity of launching and recovering aircraft at sea.

- Battle of Midway Theatre: A 90-seat theatre that presents a riveting film on the Battle of Midway, providing historical context and understanding of the pivotal WWII battle.
