A royal day out exploring the historic aspects of England's most famous castle
Windsor Castle is one of the most iconic and historically significant castles in the world. It’s also the largest inhabited castle in the world! The official residence of the King, serving as both a royal residence and a functioning royal palace.
The castle has a rich history that dates back over 900 years to the time of William the Conqueror. It was originally built as a motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century just after the Norman invasion of England in 1066 and over the centuries it has been expanded, renovated, and reconstructed by various monarchs.
The castle's architecture also reflects its long history and shows the changing tastes of the different periods and its various monarchs! It features styles including mediaeval, Gothic, and baroque elements. The Round Tower, which dominates the castle's skyline, is one of its most recognizable features.
Windsor Castle has been a royal residence for centuries and was one of Queen Elizabeth’s preferred weekend retreats. It's also used for hosting state visits, ceremonial events, and official functions.
Windsor Castle is also home to the King’s Guard, who are responsible for guarding the castle and performing ceremonial duties.
The castle has undergone several major restoration projects over the years, most notably following a devastating fire in 1992 that caused significant damage to the castle's State Apartments. The restoration efforts were extensive and aimed to preserve the castle's history whilst incorporating modern amenities and improvements.
