It was amazing. It’s too bad you are not able to take some pictures inside because it was breathtaking. The audio tour helped a lot.

About Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is one of the most iconic and historically significant castles in the world. It’s also the largest inhabited castle in the world! The official residence of the King, serving as both a royal residence and a functioning royal palace.

The castle has a rich history that dates back over 900 years to the time of William the Conqueror. It was originally built as a motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century just after the Norman invasion of England in 1066 and over the centuries it has been expanded, renovated, and reconstructed by various monarchs.

The castle's architecture also reflects its long history and shows the changing tastes of the different periods and its various monarchs! It features styles including mediaeval, Gothic, and baroque elements. The Round Tower, which dominates the castle's skyline, is one of its most recognizable features.

Windsor Castle has been a royal residence for centuries and was one of Queen Elizabeth’s preferred weekend retreats. It's also used for hosting state visits, ceremonial events, and official functions.

A popular tourist destination, Windsor Castle attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year who come to enjoy its atmosphere and grandeur and the chance to get a peek at the royal family, should they be visiting!

Visitors can enjoy:

  • The State Apartments, which are beautifully decorated with works of art, furniture, and tapestries from the Royal Collection.
  • St. George's Chapel which is located within the castle grounds. It’s also a highlight as it serves as the burial place of numerous monarchs, including King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

Windsor Castle is also home to the King’s Guard, who are responsible for guarding the castle and performing ceremonial duties.

The castle has undergone several major restoration projects over the years, most notably following a devastating fire in 1992 that caused significant damage to the castle's State Apartments. The restoration efforts were extensive and aimed to preserve the castle's history whilst incorporating modern amenities and improvements.
