Atomium, is one of Brussels' most iconic landmarks. Located in the northern part of the city, the unique structure which stands at 102 metres tall, offers a blend of unique architectural, historical significance, and cultural experiences.
The space-age design, which is made of stainless steel, was originally constructed for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58) and was meant to symbolise the peaceful use of atomic energy. The structure represents an iron crystal which has been magnified 165 billion times and consists of nine interconnected spheres.
It was only meant to be a temporary structure for the world fair. However, similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, over the years, the locals grew quite fond of it and it has since become a symbol of Brussels and a popular tourist destination!
When you visit, you can explore the Atomium and its various spheres, which house exhibits, observation decks, and unique spaces for events. It offers an immersive experience that blends art, science, and history, which reflects its origin for the world expo, and its significance. The top sphere is an observation platform, which is accessed via an elevator and offers great panoramic views of Brussels and its surroundings. You can explore the spheres via futuristic escalators and tunnels, which provides a sense of fun and adventure as you move between each one.
Design Museum Brussels - which you also get access to on the ticket is located nearby the Atomium and focuses on Belgian design. The museum complements the Atomium experience.
