Elevator to the top of the Monument a Colom

The Columbus Monument lookout was commissioned for the 1888 'Exposición Universal de Barcelona' (Universal Exposition), and was designed by Catalan architect Gaietà Buigas i Monravà to commemorates Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas in 1492.
Known locally as the 'Monument a Colom,' the monument stands at 60-metres tall at the lower end of 'La Rambla' and 'Plaça de la Porte de Pau' and was designed in a Neo-Gothic style using iron and stone. Its base is covered with intricate sculptures and reliefs that depict scenes from Columbus's journey and standing proudly at the top of the monument is a bronze statue of Columbus himself, which points to the sea.
The small lookout platform which is located just beneath the statue at the top is accessed via either a staircase of an elevator, and offers great views of Barcelona including the harbour, the historic Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter), the bell towers of Barcelona Cathedral, Montjuïc Hill as well as some of Gaudí's properties famous properties and other Barcelona Landmarks. On clear days, the view extends to Tibidabo mountain.
