Is the Eiffel Tower Worth Visiting

  • We definitely think the Eiffel Tower is worth visiting, but only if you aren’t afraid of heights!
  • We are guessing most of the 7-million annual visitors would also likely agree, especially those that return and visit again and again!

What do you see on a visit to the Eiffel Tower

  • The Eiffel Tower offers incredible views of the city.

About the Eiffel Tower in Paris

Named after the engineer that designed and constructed it (Gustave Eiffel), the Eiffel Tower was actually built for the World Fair of 1889 and incredibly, it only took them two years and two months to construct it! They started in 1887 and finishing it in time for the World Fair of 1889!

The Eiffel Tower was built after the design won a competition that was run by the French Government to build a structure for the World Fair. Gustave Eiffel was one of around 100 submissions received by the French Government and it was Gustave Eiffel’s design that won, which is how it was then built!

The Eiffel Tower stands at 300 metres (984 feet) tall. When it was constructed, it was actually the tallest man-made structure in the world at the time. A record it held on to for 41 years until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930!

The tower is made of iron and consists of three levels.  Each level offers an observation deck, a small shop and a restaurant! The higher you go, in our opinion, the better the views get!

Eiffel Tower Floors

The first two floors
  • You can either access via an elevator or you can climb the stairs to get to them.
  • The first floor is the largest with the biggest observation deck.
  • You will also find the Ferrié Pavilion which offers a restaurant/bar and a gift shop and a small play area for kids.
  • The first floor also has a section with glass floor panels allowing you to see straight down below you! We love that aspect!
The second floor
  • You can access this floor either by elevator or staircase.
  • The second floor offers another observation deck with incredible views including the Louvre, Grand Palais, the Seine, Montmartre, Invalides and Notre Dame, amongst others.
  • You can also dine on the second floor with a family restaurant, or you can go upmarket at the Michelin-starred restaurant, Jules Verne, which is also located on the second floor. Bookings may be required.
  • There is also a souvenir shop on the second floor!
The third floor
  • The third floor is the highest level and you can only access it via a glass-walled elevator!
  • The third-floor is considerably smaller than the first and second floors as it’s almost at the top of the tower (you’ve still got the famous antennae above you!) but you reach a height of 276m up when on the third floor.
  • The third floor is still home to Gustave Eiffel’s office, which has been restored to its original condition and is now used as a museum (you can’t enter, but can look in through the windows).
  • There are life-sized models of Gustave Eiffel himself in his office along with his daughter, Clare, and they are having a meeting with Thomas Edison (the inventor of the lightbulb)!
  • The third-floor also offers an observation deck with incredible views of the city.
  • There is also a Champagne Bar at the top, where you can enjoy a glass of Champagne. A great experience.

Eiffel Tower Fun and Interesting Facts

  • Temporary Landmark: The Eiffel Tower was originally intended to be a temporary structure, built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) in Paris. It was supposed to be dismantled after 20 years, but it became so popular that it was allowed to remain.
  • Height Varies with Temperature: The Eiffel Tower is made of iron, which expands and contracts with temperature changes. As a result, the tower can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) taller during the summer!
  • Painted Every Seven Years: To prevent rust, the Eiffel Tower is repainted every seven years. It takes about 60 tons of paint to cover the entire structure, and the process takes around 18 months to complete.
  • Eyesore: When the Eiffel Tower was first built, many Parisians and artists criticised its design, calling it an eyesore. Over time, however, it has become one of the most iconic symbols of Paris and France.
  • Radio Saved It: The Eiffel Tower was nearly dismantled after its initial 20-year permit expired, but it was saved because it proved useful as a giant radio antenna. During World War I, the tower was used to intercept enemy communications.
  • A Beacon of Light: The Eiffel Tower is illuminated by 20,000 light bulbs every evening. This sparkling display occurs for five minutes every hour on the hour after sunset, making it a spectacular sight for visitors.

  • A Popular Proposal Spot: The Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular spots in the world for marriage proposals. It's estimated that hundreds of proposals happen each year, making it a true symbol of romance.
