The Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in November 2017 and it’s the first universal museum in the Arab world, making it very special. It offers a blend of art, architecture, and cultural exchange.
The building was designed by the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, so is an architectural masterpiece. The design was inspired by traditional Islamic architecture and the natural environment of Abu Dhabi. One of its most striking features is the massive dome, which spans 180 metres and weighs nearly as much as the Eiffel Tower!
The dome is made up of 7,850 star-shaped elements, which create an incredible ‘rain of light’ effect in the museum, where sunlight filters through and casts intricate patterns of light on the ground below. This feature alone makes the museum a stunning sight, both inside and out!
The collection is set up over multiple galleries and included the following sections:
It's made up of art, sculptures & artefacts from around the world and includes works from a wide range of cultures and civilizations, which are organised thematically rather than chronologically or geographically. This approach allows you to see connections between different cultures and eras.
Some of the highlights of the collection include:
The museum also hosts rotating temporary exhibitions which are often in collaboration with other major museums around the world, including its partner, the Louvre in Paris. The exhibitions explore specific themes, periods, or artists in greater depth and often include loans from prestigious international collections.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi has a special section set up for kids where they can learn about and enjoy art as well with immersive exhibitions for them to have fun with. A great way of introducing the younger ones to the world of art.
Museum Dress Code: While there is no strict dress code, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly in respect of the local culture.
