About Louvre Abu Dhabi

The Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in November 2017 and it’s the first universal museum in the Arab world, making it very special. It offers a blend of art, architecture, and cultural exchange.

The building was designed by the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, so its an architectural masterpiece as well. The design was inspired by traditional Islamic architecture and the natural environment of Abu Dhabi. One of its most striking features is the massive dome, which spans 180 metres and weighs nearly as much as the Eiffel Tower!

The dome is made up of 7,850 star-shaped elements, which create an incredible ‘rain of light’ effect in the museum, where sunlight filters through and casts intricate patterns of light on the ground below. This feature alone makes the museum a stunning sight, both inside and out!

The collection is set up over multiple galleries

  • First Villages: Including early figurines and tools from the Palaeolithic era onwards.
  • First Great Powers: About the rise and falls of empires.
  • Civilisations & Empires: The big empires such as Rome, China and more including architecture and culture.
  • Universal Religions: Shared humanity and expression through religion and other means.
  • Caravans and the Silk Road: The history of the Silk Road, the network of trade routes with different cultures and goods.
  • From the Mediterranean to the Atlantic: The difference between the cultures.
  • First Globalisation: How globalisation started.
  • World-Empires: More on the rise and fall of empires.
  • Towards a Modern World: How the world has changed.

It includes art, sculptures & artifacts from around the world as well as works from a wide range of cultures and civilizations, which are organised thematically rather than chronologically or geographically. This approach allows you to see connections between different cultures and eras.

Some of the highlights of the collection include:

  • Leonardo da Vinci's "La Belle Ferronnière": One of only a few da Vinci paintings outside of Europe.
  • Ancient Egyptian artefacts: Including a funerary set of Princess Henuttawy.
  • Islamic art: With manuscripts, ceramics, and textiles from various Islamic civilizations.
  • Modern and contemporary art: Featuring works by artists like Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, and Ai Weiwei.

The museum also hosts rotating temporary exhibitions which are often in collaboration with other major museums around the world, including its partner, the Louvre in Paris. The exhibitions explore specific themes, periods, or artists in greater depth and often include loans from prestigious international collections.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has a special section set up for kids as well, where they can learn about and enjoy art as well with immersive exhibitions for them to have fun with. A great way of introducing the younger ones to the world of art.

Museum Dress Code: While there is no strict dress code, you are encouraged to dress modestly in respect of the local culture.
