Tips for Visiting Abu Dhabi

  • Respect Local Customs and Dress Code: Abu Dhabi is a culturally rich and traditional city. Dress modestly, especially in public places like malls, mosques, and souks. For women, covering shoulders and knees is advisable as it shows a mark of respect for the culture. Men should avoid wearing shorts in formal settings.
  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Abu Dhabi is between November and March when the weather is cooler. Summers (June–August) can be extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F), so if you don’t like the heat, we suggest avoiding those months!
  • Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: The mosque is an amazing architectural masterpiece and in our opinion, it’s a must-see. Entry is free, but visitors must follow a strict dress code. Women should cover their heads, arms, and legs, while men should wear long trousers.
  • Use Public Transportation or Taxis: Abu Dhabi has a well-maintained bus network and plenty of metered taxis. Alternatively, apps like Uber and Careem are convenient options.
  • Remember the Weekend: The UAE weekend is Friday and Saturday. Many businesses close on Friday mornings, and this is also when the main prayer of the week takes place.
  • Yas Island: Yas Island is home to attractions like Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, and Warner Bros. World. Don’t miss the Formula 1 circuit if you're a motorsport fan.
  • Local Cuisine: Try Emirati dishes like ‘machboos/Kabsa’ which is a one-pot chicken and rice dish, ‘shawarma/kebab’, a meat filled wrap, and ‘luqaimat’, which are a type of fried dough ball or sweet dumplings!
  • Desert Activities: Consider taking part in a desert safari for an adventure that includes dune bashing, camel rides, and a Bedouin-style dinner under the stars. It’s something that you can’t do in many places around the world, so you should take advantage when you can! Click HERE for options.
  • Follow Local Laws and Regulations: Alcohol is available in licensed hotels and bars, but drinking in public is prohibited. Avoid public displays of affection and be mindful of strict laws regarding behaviour in public.
  • Bonus Tip: The currency is the UAE dirham (AED). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to carry some cash for smaller purchases.
