The National Palace of Pena or the 'Palácio Nacional da Pena' in Portuguese, is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sintra. The romanticist castle stands proudly on top of a hill in the mountains overlooking the town of Sintra and offers amazing views of the surrounding countryside and coastline.
The site dates back to the Middle Ages when a chapel dedicated to 'Our Lady of Pena' was built on the site. Then, in the 19th century, King Ferdinand II of Portugal acquired the ruins of the chapel as well as the surrounding land and he commissioned a German architect by the name of 'Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege' to design a palace that would be used as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. The result was a blend of architectural styles, including Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline influences, which reflect the eclectic tastes of the Romantic era!
One of the most striking features of the palace has got to be its vibrant colour scheme. The exterior walls are painted in shades of red, yellow, and ochre, which gives the palace a fairy-tale-like appearance and then intricate decorative elements, such as turrets, battlements, and domes, cover the exterior, further enhancing its romantic charm!
You can explore the lavishly decorated rooms inside the palace, including:
The interiors feature ornate furnishings, intricate tilework, and elaborate stucco decorations, which show the opulence of 19th-century royal living! The palace is also surrounded by a vast park, known as the ‘Pena Park’, which features beautiful gardens, winding pathways, and exotic plant species from around the world. You can stroll through the park's forested areas, discover hidden grottos and waterfalls, and enjoy panoramic views from various viewpoints which are scattered throughout the grounds.
