Explore the Wetlands habitat, the Coral Reef Gallery, or stroke a stingray!
The Florida Aquarium in Tampa is one of the top aquariums in the country and a favourite destination for marine life enthusiasts as well as families looking for a fun day out.
The aquarium is split into several different habitats and exhibits for visitors to enjoy including:
Wetlands of Florida: This section features a variety of Florida’s native species including birds, turtles, alligators and playful otters. Set out in an 80-foot glass dome, the animals live a life of bliss in the simulated wetlands environment and you can enjoy their company as you walk through the section and admire them.
Journey to Madagascar: In this section you will find ring tailed lemurs, you will hear the hissing cockroaches and you may even spot a Tomato frog, all of which are native to Madagascar!
Shorelines: In this fun section you will find animals that live along the shorelines of Florida’s coast. Things like spiny lobsters, eels, pufferfish, rays and others! Whether their home is in the rockpools or the bridges along the coast, if it lives near the shoreline or the shallow waters around Florida you may find it here! This section also has a fun touch pool area as well where you can get a little closer to some of the residents. We love touch pools!
Coral Reef: Can you guess what you will find in this section! This is the aquarium's largest section with over 500,000 gallons of water in the tanks! As well as the beautiful coral reef, you will find sand tiger sharks, sea turtles, giant Atlantic stingrays, moray eels and a lot of reef fish in this colourful area.
Reef Secrets: In this amazing section you will find seahorses and pipehorse. Did you know it’s the male seahorses that carry the eggs with the babies until they hatch!
Waves of Wonder: This section of the aquarium focuses on ocean conservation and showcases the amazing diversity of ocean life. You can spot jellyfish, clownfish and anemones, sea turtles, hogfish, honeycomb rays and bonnethead sharks in the section too!
No Bone Zone: Another fun touch pool section - this one is home to species including sea stars, anemones, sea cucumbers and others!
As you can see, there is plenty to see and do at The Florida Aquarium, which is why it’s a firm favourite. The aquarium also offers special activities as well such as the opportunity to feed the stingrays or even meet a penguin! You can even opt for a dive in the big tank with a SeaTREK experience, which involves swimming with the sharks! Ask on site for the details.
