Villa Medici sits in the heart of Rome near the iconic Spanish Steps and adjacent to the Villa Borghese estate. The properties history dates back more than 2000 years and includes numerous transformations.
Originally part of the 'Gardens of Lucullus', the estate also served as a military camp during the Byzantine Empire. In 1576, Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici acquired the property and, in collaboration with Bartolomeo Ammanati, undertook significant renovations, giving the villa its current name.
The property remained in the Medici family until the 1800's when the French State acquired it and still to this day own it. It now houses an academy there since the early 1800s.
Visitors to Villa Medici can explore its exquisite gardens, which offer incredible views of Rome, and the gallery, home to an impressive collection of art amassed by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici. This collection includes around 400 pieces, featuring paintings, tapestries, and sculptures, showcasing the rich artistic heritage of the villa.
