The Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animal Centre is a remarkable haven that provides refuge to a wide range of animals, both on a temporary basis for rehabilitation purposes, and permanent new home, where animals can't be set free into the wild again for various reasons, including health.
Many of the animals have lost their natural homes due to various environmental challenges or human activity. Others come to recover and are released back into their natural environments once they are strong enough.
The sanctuary is home to around 55 different species, including a variety of monkeys like capuchins, lemurs, tamarins, spider, and squirrel monkeys, as well as otters, tropical birds, reptiles, and other creatures.
A key focus of the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is the protection of primates native to the region but the sanctuary runs dedicated conservation programs designed to provide a safe environment for primates that have been rescued from illegal trade or habitat loss. Whether these animals find a permanent home at the sanctuary or are rehabilitated for eventual release, the focus is always on their well-being.
The sanctuary is deeply committed to education, giving visitors a unique opportunity to learn about primate conservation and the role these animals play in maintaining ecological balance. Expert guides provide insights into the challenges primates face in the wild and how the sanctuary contributes to their protection.
In collaboration with PROFEPA (The Federal Office of Environmental Protection) and Mexican universities, the sanctuary supports research aimed at improving biodiversity conservation.
Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is a fantastic destination for a fun, educational family day out, where visitors can interact with some of the friendlier animals and learn about different species up close.
