5 Fun Facts About Cancún
Cancún Was a Tourism Project: Cancún was specifically developed as a tourist destination in the 1970s by the Mexican government. It was a largely uninhabited area before being transformed into the popular vacation hotspot it is today!
The Meaning of Cancún: The name "Cancún" comes from the Mayan language. It is believed to mean either "nest of snakes" or "place of the golden snake," which may have referenced the region’s natural wildlife, but don’t let that put you off!.
Second Largest Coral Reef: Cancún is home to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is the second-largest coral reef in the world. It stretches over 600 miles and provides incredible diving and snorkelling opportunities!
Underwater Museum: Cancún boasts the world’s largest underwater museum, called the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA)! The museum features more than 500 life-size sculptures submerged to promote coral growth and marine life.
Home to Ancient Ruins: While Cancún is modern and tourist-focused, it’s close to significant ancient Mayan ruins. Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and Tulum are both accessible for day trips from Cancún.
Tips for Visiting Cancún
Choose the Right Season: The best time to visit Cancún is December to April as the weather is generally better! Avoid hurricane season (June to November) and consider the shoulder months (May or November) for smaller crowds and potentially lower prices.
Stay in the Right Area: The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is ideal for beachfront luxury, nightlife, and proximity to attractions. Downtown Cancún (El Centro) is more budget-friendly and gives a taste of local life if you want to experience that.
Take a BOAT TOUR to see the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world! Or one of the other great options available.
Pack for the Climate: Lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. Bring biodegradable sunscreen for eco-friendly swimming in cenotes or reefs if possible as it helps to protect them and the wildlife that live in them.
Use Pesos, Not Dollars: While U.S. dollars are accepted in many places, using Mexican pesos will often give you better value and is appreciated by locals.
Try Local Food: Explore authentic Mexican dishes like ‘cochinita pibil’, ‘tacos al pastor’, and fresh seafood! Visit local markets like Mercado 28 for affordable meals and souvenirs.
Stay Hydrated and Avoid Tap Water: Drink bottled or filtered water to avoid stomach issues. Avoid ice unless it’s from a trusted source.
Be Prepared for Transportation: Use public buses in the Hotel Zone as they are cheap, frequent, and convenient. Taxis can be expensive so we suggest agreeing to a fare at the start of the journey - simply tell the driver where you want to go and ask how much before you accept.
Take Advantage of Free and Low-Cost Activities: Relax on public beaches like Playa Delfines, which also has a famous Cancún sign for photos. Stroll through El Parque de las Palapas for live entertainment and street food.
Stay Safe: Stick to tourist-friendly areas and avoid wandering into less secure parts of downtown at night. Keep valuables in a safe place, and be cautious of over-friendly vendors or pushy salespeople.
